This one-to-one caregiving ministry is named for Stephen, one of the first seven laypeople called by the church to assist the apostles in caring for others. (You can read Stephen’s story in Acts 6 and 7.)
Stephen Ministry is Christ caring for people through people.
Stephen Ministers work alongside our pastors to care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support to people inside and outside our church family who are going through a difficult time such as divorce, grief, hospitalization, unemployment, terminal illness, loneliness or any other crisis or difficulty.
Stephen Ministry is overseen by Irene Greer.
"Before coming to the Okanagan, I was involved in Stephen Ministry at Livingstones Church in Red Deer, AB. It’s an amazing ministry!
If I can use Peter Scazzero’s words, they describe for me exactly what Stephen Ministers do:
'To listen incarnationally is to enter into another person’s world, at a heart level, with the empathy of Christ, attending to their nonverbal cues as well as their words. This is how we demonstrate our love for them. We truly listen to what they say and feel what they feel. And in so doing, by God’s grace, they experience the presence of Christ through us.'
We were created for relationship and community. By initiating Stephen Ministry, we will be meeting a need that needs to be met by our community. I invite you to come along on this journey – we will learn and experience much together." Irene Greer
LCA wants to effectively share the love and compassion of Christ.
Stephen Minister Training will begin in September (dependent on the covid-19 restrictions).
